WASHINGTON, January 31, 2017 – Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, congratulated Elaine Chao on her confirmation today as our nation’s 18th Secretary of Transportation.
“Secretary Chao is a distinguished leader who understands well the critical role commercial aviation plays as a driver of economic growth and jobs across the country and throughout the world,” said A4A President and CEO Nicholas E. Calio. “We congratulate Secretary Chao on her confirmation and stand ready to work together to meet the needs of the traveling and shipping public.”
U.S. airlines operate 27,000 flights each day that carry 2.2 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo. We support 10 million U.S. jobs and drive 5 percent of the nation’s GDP, which equated to over $800 billion in 2014.
“connects people and goods to the economy in a way no other industry can,” said Calio. “The infrastructure of our nation’s skies is important to our economy, and we’re confident Secretary Chao will be a collaborative partner as we work toward achieving our shared goals of ushering in a new era of smarter regulation, innovation and reforms.”
Annually, commercial aviation helps drive $1.5 trillion in U.S. economic activity and more than 10 million U.S. jobs. Airlines for America (A4A) vigorously advocates on behalf of the American airline industry as a model of safety, customer service and environmental responsibility and as the indispensable network that drives our nation’s economy and global competitiveness.
America needs a cohesive National Airline Policy that will support the integral role the nation’s airlines play in connecting people and goods globally, spur the nation’s economic growth and create more high-paying jobs. A4A works collaboratively with the airlines, labor groups, Congress and the Administration to improve air travel for everyone.
