Honoring Juneteenth

On Wednesday June 19th, Airlines for America (A4A) will observe Juneteenth – the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Union Major General Gordon Granger informed nearly 250,000 enslaved individuals the Civil War had ended and that they were now free – more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a day to reflect on America’s complicated history and examine how far our country has come and how far we still have left to go to ensure equality and justice for all.

A4A and our member airlines are committed to promoting diversity, equality and inclusion. Our work to connect the world inspires us to foster a culture of respect among passengers and employees. A4A carriers have been increasing their outreach and expanding recruitment programs to secure a pipeline of well-qualified, diverse employees—including pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and others. We hope you will join us in celebrating and reflecting on the significance that this day holds as we all work together to take action, create stronger bonds and forge understanding.
